no,you cannot appear for the UPSC IES exam after being a production engineer.
IES is Indian engineering service.
--->it is conducted by union public service commission.
the eligibility criteria for IES are:
1.you have a bachelor degree in engineering in following trade:
>>civil engineering
>>mechanical engineering
>>electrical engineering
>>electronics engineering.
2.the age limit is 21 to 30 years.
>>relaxation of five years is given to obc/sc/st.
3.you must be an Indian citizen.

i feel very sorry to say that you are not eligible for upsc IES EXAMINATION.
because only those engineering students are eligible for the same who had completed
their graduation with these branches given below.
1. civil engineering.
2. electrical engineering.
3. mechanical engineering.
4. electronics and telecommunication engineering.
so you are not eligible for the same.
but you can give so many other exams like.
1. CDSE.
2. CSE.'

Academic Eligibility:
You must be a graduate in Engineering from a recognized university in Electronics/Civil/Mechanical/Electrical. Even Final year students can also appear in IES exam, provided he/she can provide the proof of passing the exam when IES exam (Written) result comes out, which is around December 2012. Important dates:
Date of notification & Online submission of form starts : March Last date for submission of IES 2012 Online form : April Date of IES 2012 exam : June(3 days) Online Form: You can apply for IES exam only online. Offline IES Exam forms were available till last year, but starting from IES 2012, there is no offline application form.
Dear Aspirant !
No, you cannot apply for Indian Engineering Service (IES) examination with a production stream in Engineering.
Only those who copmleted engineering in either Electrical/Mecahanical/Civil engineering stream and whose age between 21 to 30 years are only eligible Indian Engineering Service examination.
My Suggestion is better to apply for Civil Services Examination,by your Degree.Civil Service examinations conducted by UPSC once in a year,Notification may be released in the month of Feb/March...

sorry you can not apply for IES being a production engineer because for becoming an ies officer only civil engineering,mechanical engineering,electrical engineering,electronics engineering students are eligible .
along with that your age should be between
21-30 years for general category
21-33 years for obc
and 21-35 years for sc/st category
general category aspirants have 4 attempts for this exam
obc category aspirants have 7 attempts
and sc/st candidates have no limit of attempts for this exam.they can apply for this exam unless they eligible on account of their age criteria .
