    Hello

YES YOU CAN APPLY FOR THE IAS .

The educational qualification for applying in the IAS is graduation only from any stream and from any mode of education. The educational qualification require is just graduation.

You want to apply for the IAS after or before Ph.d,then there is no such issues with your qualification,a ph.d is even more qualified than a graduate.
Hence there is no issue regarding the qualification, there is no harm in having something extra, but there should not be anything less than the requirement, and in your case it is so very extra.

But the biggest fact that you should check is the age limit, the age limit for the general candidates for applying in the IAS is 21 to 30 years, you must check your age limit,as this the only factor that can cause any problem with your IAS,when you are thinking of applying for IAS after completing ph.d.

Re: Can I become an IAS officer after or before doing P.hd?

Yes, you can surely become IAS Officer, if you have any degree from recognized university.

You have to give the Civil services exam conducted by UPSC.

To apply these exams,P.hd is not needed, it depends on you whether to apply for the exam after P.hd or before P.hd.

My advice is to apply for the exam right now and start your preparations for the exam before doing your P.hd.

Because, there is one more criteria to give this exam, i.e age, the minimum age required is 21 years and maximum is 30 years.

So, if you apply for the exam after completion of your P.hd degree then you may reach almost 28, this decreases your chances for the exam.

If you belong to any reserved category, then there is age relaxation.

For OBC candidates, the maximum age is 33 years.

For SC/ST Candidates, the maximum age is 35 years.

For PWD/Ex-service men, the maximum age is 40 years.

There is also restriction on the number of attempts for this exam.

For general category, only 4 attempts.

    For OBC Category, 7 attempts.

For SC/ST, there is no limitation.

    Exam pattern:

    Preliminary exam or CSAT

    Mains

    Interview.

Next UPSC Civil services Preliminary exam is on 19-05-2013.

    Date of Notification: 02-02-2013.

Last date for receipt of application: 04-03-2013.

Dear there is no criteria for PhD candidates means the IAS examination requires different qualification and different selection process which is following as

A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university and final year pursuing candidates are also eligible to apply for this examination

Age should not be less than 21 years and more than 30 years and relaxation in upper age as per government guidelines which is 5 years for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC category candidates

If you have above mentioned qualification then you can apply for UPSC Civil Services IAS Examination

Examination Pattern and Selection Process :

Preliminary examination : This is the first test conducted in this exam and this would be conducted in objective type pattern in which you have to qualify two different papers for 200 marks and if you could not get qualified in this exam then you will not be allowed for next test

Mains Examination : This would be the second test in this examination procedure in which you have to quality various 9 conventional type papers and total 2000 marks alloted for 9 papers and qualifying in each paper is necessary and you would have to choose any two subjects from the following list for this examination

    Agriculture
    Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
    Anthropology
    Botany
    Chemistry
    Civil Engineering
    Commerce and Accountancy
    Economics
    Electrical Engineering
    Geography
    Geology
    History
    Law
    Management
    Mathematics
    Mechanical Engineering
    Medical Science
    Physics
    Philosophy
    Political Science and International Relations
    Psychology
    Public Administration
    Sociology
    Statistics
    Zoology

Dear if you get qualified in the prelims and mains examination then you would be called for interview process and after getting qualified in interview process, you would be selected for the post of IAS officer in India

UPSC IAS Preliminary exam is going to be conducted at - 19th of may 2013

    All the best
