Can I choose English literature as optional paper (paper 1) while Paper II also being an English qualifying paper?

    Hi Everyone

Going throught the UPSC website, wherein they have mentioned

List of Optional Subjects (Literature) - CS (Main) - (Total 26)
    Arabic Gujarati Manipuri Sanskrit
    Assamese Hindi Nepali Sindhi
    Bengali Kannada Oriya Tamil
    Chinese Kashmiri Pali Telugu
    English Konkani Persian Urdu
    French Marathi Punjabi
    German Malayalam Russian

My question is, in the present format of the examnination, wherein Paper I of the main examination assesses a candidate on one of the the "Indian Languages" and the list of those optional languages being aforementioned

Can i choose english as an optional language for Paper I while Paper II also being an English Qualifying Paper???

    hi friend,

    no you have misunderstood.

see for paper A you have select one language as mentioned in the 8th schedule of the constitution.you can see the eigth schedule and select one language.examples are tamil,hindi,malayalam,marathi,telegu,etc...here you cannot opt for english as english will not come under the languages mentioned in the eighth schedule..

as far as the paper B is concerned you have to take english because it is an qualifying paper to test your english language skill.

The list which you have mentioned in your question are the list of optional subjects mentioned by the upsc for the mains optional literature subjects.so both the lists are entirely different.here you can take english as a optional suject.

it is important to have proficiency in one regional language to qualify paper A

    all the best
