Optional subjects that are available to choose for two conventional type papers in main examination and you may choose any one subject from this list for both papers 6 and 7

    Agriculture
    Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
    Anthropology
    Botany
    Chemistry
    Civil Engineering
    Commerce and Accountancy
    Economics
    Electrical Engineering
    Geography
    Geology
    History
    Law
    Management
    Mathematics
    Mechanical Engineering
    Medical Science
    Philosophy
    Physics
    Political Science and International Relations
    Psychology
    Public Administration
    Sociology
    Statistics
    Zoology

Both papers will be conducted for 500 marks in that 250 marks for each and remember that qualifying in each paper of the main examination is compulsory in that Paper I will be for - Essay Writing and English Precis contains 300 marks and Paper II, III, IV and VI for General Studies contains 250 marks each

If you want to choose right subject for the main examination of UPSC IAS then you should know your background of education first in that know specialization subjects and other subjects that you have studied at graduation level because you are proficient in any subject of your degree and that will be helpful for you and if you do not want to choose any subject relating your degree then also there is no problem in choosing any other subject for main examination because you have the list and you are independent to choose anyone then you should keep your interest first

If you are interested in any subject listed above then you can take that because your interest will give you more knowledge over that subject but read complete syllabus of that subject then only you should proceed further to choose subject for main exam and syllabus will give you knowledge that you are able to study that or not and complete syllabus of the subject and other details are mentioned in attached notification so please download

    All the best

    Friend,
There is no restriction on the choice of the optional subjects for the UPSC main exam.

You may choose any subject according to your own will, it has nothing to do with the subjects in the graduation level.

But there is a list of subjects and you need to choose from them only, here is the list:-

    >>Commerce

    >>Economics

    >>Geology

    >>Civil Engineering

    >>Agriculture

    >>Animal Husbandry and Vetinary Science

    >>Statistics

    >>Mathematics

    >>Indian History

    >>Philosophy

    >>Medical Science

    >>Physics

    >>Psychology

    >>Sociology

    >>Chemistry

    >>Botany

    >>Public Administartion

    >>mechanical Engineering

    >>Mathematics

    >>Political Science

    >>Law

    >>Geography

    >>Electrical Engineering.

So if you want you may take up Indian History as optional for mains.

    Dear Aspirant

In the new pattern introduced by civil service examination importance of optional has been reduced to increase the weightage of General Studies and to check aptitude for civil service examination. But then it doesn't mean you have not concern for selection of optional.Selecting a good optional is very much important. It plays a key role in selection of students for various services like IAS (Indian Administrative Services ),IFS(Indian Foreign Services),IPS(Indian Police Services),IRS (Indian Revenue Service)I

There are various factor upon which generally optional paper are selected. Some paper are considered scoring. There are some paper whose study material is easily available,Besides these some paper are considered tough as they required through clear of concepts in order to give the paper. But in my point whether paper is tough or easy it all depends upon our choice.Infact a good quotation for this"You cannot expect fish to climb a tree".Simimlarly it is your interest in subject which will make you successful.

See try to find in which paper you have interest among the list of 25 optional provided by the commission.INterest simply means you have general aptitude to know what is happening in that subject. What the topics are.Besides reading the words in the book you understand what it is trying to interpret.YOu are ready to devote few hours of daily in order to know about the subjects. You are willing to do study whenever you feel free. You love solving questions of that subjects. Then you have genuine interest in that paper

    Hello friend,

your question are quite common and asked by every computer science or information technology aspirants because there is No any subject related to computer science or IT.

but this is not a big obstacle in the path of winners, you have so many choices as given in the list below.

so my advice is that as you know you have to choose another subjects for mains examination so take decision fast because it is a career making decision for you and start your preparation hardly and with complete dedication.

    Agriculture,

    Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science,

    Botany,

    Chemistry,

    Civil Engineering,

    Commerce and Accountancy,

    \Economics,

    Electrical Engineering,

    Geography,

    Geology,

    History,

    Law,

    Management,

    Mathematics,

    Mechanical Engineering,

    Medical Science,

    Philosophy,

    Physics,

    Political Science and International Relations,

    Psychology,

    Public Administration,

    Sociology,

    Statistics,

    Zoology.

but if you are going to take Indian history than I am agree with your decision because this is the only subject which have a fixed course and easy to understand ,whereas you have another option also like mathematics and physics because you were in touch of the subjects so it is depend on your choice and interest but my opinion is to take history because it is a good subject for preparation in a limited time period .

but always remember you have to choose two optional subjects for Mains examination so you have to choose one other subject after choosing history or any other subject ,so choose your subjects in the given list above and start preparing yourself for the examination as soon as possible.

To choose the optional subjects all you need to do is to opt for the subjects which is easier for you and should not go according to your qualification because if you are good in geography and thinks geography is a good thingthat you can qualify easily then you need to go for that because its always better to choose the subjects which is easier for you.
You can take the different subjects to qualify the mains examination because that only required the graduation and they are not having anything else apart from that.
Here is the eligibility criteria for the same as follows-
Eligibility criteria for the Civil services examination-
Age should be 21 to 30 years of age.
Graduation in any discipline from a recognised university can apply for the same.
Age relaxation for the civil services examination is as follows-
    SC/ST 5 years.
    OBC 3 years.
    Ex servicemen 5 years.
Disabled defence officer in army during war for commissioned officer 3 years of age relaxation.
    Examination pattern-
CSAT stands foir the civil services aptitude test which is the first stage of the examination. It consist of 2 papers and both general studies of 400 marks total.
MAINS examination is if you qualify the examination CSAT then called for the Mains examination.
There will be 9 papers of 2000 marks .
By qualifying the same candidates are called for the interview.
    Interview consist of 300 marks.
