Re: How to start preparing for UPSC preliminary exams? How to choose the subjects for Indian Police Service?

UPSC conducts the Civil Services Exam(CSE) every year to make recruitments to 24 services/posts.

CSE is conducted in 3 stages :
-Prelims/CSAT Exam-is conducted to shortlist candidates for the Mains exam.
It consists of 2 papers of General Studies of 200 papers each.Total weightage for CSAT Exam is 400 marks.

-Mains Exam-is conducted to judge the indepth knoweledge and intellegence of candidates. It consists of 9 papers
and total weightage is 2000 marks.Choice of two optional subjects have to be made at this stage.

-Interviews-must clear the mains exam to get an interview call.It is the test of personality of candidates and is of 300 marks.
After clearing the interviews one is ranked in the Final Merit List and assigned a post.

    Tips for preparations :
-Start with reading NCERT Books from school Level to clear your basic concepts.
-Study for atleast 6-8hrs daily and follow the syllabus given by UPSC.
-Solve Previous year question bank and model test papers.
-Read atleast 2 good newspapers daily like The Hindu,The Economic Times, etc.
-Read good magazines like Pratiyogita Darpan,CSR,Manorama Year Book, etc.
-Make your own notes on each topic and maintain a file for revision later.
-Manage your time properly to devote maximum time to CSE preparations and do selective study
& avoid wastage of time through time management.
-Join a coaching centre if you feel the need for guidance.
-Read good books, refer to reliable study materials, read articles of good authors only.
-Prepare simultaneously for CSAT/Prelims exam amd Mains Exam.

To choose optional subjects for Mains Exam and to become an IPS Officer by getting top rank in CSE
you should select subjects of which you have indepth knowledge or you have studied at the graduate level
and you think you are well conversed with. You should choose the optional subjects according to your comfort level
so that you can prepare well and clear the Mains exam to get a good rank.It should be the subject of your interest.
