Re: I am a M.Tech (CSE) student. Which subject should I choose for Civil Services Exam?

Examination Pattern and Selection Procedure for UPSC Civil Service Exam 2013 :

Preliminary Exam : Dear it is the first step in the civil service exam and in this test you will have to qualify two different objective type papers which consist 200 marks each and if you could not qualify in this test then you would not be eligible to apply for mains examination.

Mains Examination : Dear it is the second step in this exam and only those candidates are allowed to apply and appear for this exam who will successfully qualify the preliminary exam by securing minimum qualifying marks as per UPSC Board standards and this exam would be conducted in conventional type pattern and the complete pattern is following for this exam :

Paper I - Any one Indian Language from the list of UPSC board - 300 marks
Paper II - English Language - 300 marks
Paper III - Essay on any one of the given topics - 200 marks
Paper IV and V would be for - General Studies as I and II and each contains 300 marks
Paper VI and VII would be for - Any one selected subject means each subject has 2 papers for - 300 marks
Paper VIII and IX also would be for any one selected subject and these papers also has - 300 marks

Total marks alloted in this mains examination - 2000 for 9 various above mentioned papers and remember dear that qualifying in each and every single paper is most necessary for each and every candidate by securing the minimum qualifying marks decided by UPSC board after the examination

You also would be offered to selected any two subjects according to your choice and you may choose any two subjects from the following list of subjects available in the examination :

You are from computer engineering stream so that dear there are three optional subjects for you in the mentioned list which are - Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering and you may choose any two from these three subjects and you should not hurry to choose the subjects because before that you should prepare for preliminary exam and you would be eligible to choose the subject for mains exam only after qualifying the prelims so dear prepare for prelims first. When you get qualified in the prelims then you should analyze in yourself that for which engineering subject you are prepared well means if you have good command over any two from three then you may choose those two subjects and you may also choose any one from three and choose any one other from this list or you may also go for any one literature subject for your mains exam so be cool and prepare for preliminary first and get qualified

Interview Process : Dear if you successfully qualify in the prelims and mains exam as per UPSC standards then you should be prepared for interview process because after this you will get the call for interview by UPSC board and this is the final and most tough step to get qualified and if you become successful in this too so that you would become an IAS officer and it consist 300 marks

Your final selection would be done on the basis of mains exam and interview process marks means :

2000 + 300 = 2300 marks are there for your selection so that dear you should prepare hard for mains exam also so that you could get highest marks in the mains exam also

You can apply for this exam between these following dates which are decided by UPSC board :

There is a process to choose optionals. You must follow it to get the best ones for YOU. Firstly, strike out the subjects from the complete list that you think you can't take in any circumstances. Secondly, go through the syllabus of each of remaining subjects and select the ones that you think you can manage. Thirdly, ask your more than one seniors who have actually given the exam with those subjects. Finally, make the decision about the subjects.

Mind it, the final decision will be yours and it must be based more on your interest in the subject, availability of good study material, availability of good tutor/guide in case you need some help during your preparation. Don't go by the experience of a single person. If you have right frame of mind, right approach, you can crack UPSC with any subject of YOUR choice.
