ELIGIBILITY :

Not for all posts, production and mechanical engineers are treated similarly. For IES, service depends on which paper you are opting in the written exam. As you are from production, you will obviously opt for Mechanical paper and there you will be same as Mechanical engrs.
Certain PSUs have same criteria for Production and they are selected under the Mechanical stream such as NTPC and SAIL.their papers are set for Mechanical engr but Production engrs are also eligible for those exams under Mechanical engg.
Some PSUs clearly mention that Production engineers or say Automobile engrs are not eligible to apply under Mechanical stream.
RRBs generally have separate vacancies for Production engineers or they also mention that Production engrs are eligible for vacancies under Mechanical engrs.
Read the notification carefully before applying as they clearly mention about the eligibility for related branches under some main branch.

Hello my Dear Friend ..
Yeah
Of course .. Why not ??
"" MECHANICAL ENGINEERING "" is a " Main Stream "
Where as the "" PRODUCTION ENGINEERING "" is the "" Sub Stream "" in it
Usually most of the Subjects will be studied by the Production candidates in the Mechanical Syllabus
Some of the most important Subjects are ::
>> Production Technology
>> Non Conventional Techniques
>> Strength of Materials
>> Fluid Mechanics
>> Thermal Engineering
>> Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
So you are Definitely eligible to appear for the exam
That is why you can apply for the
<> U.P.S.C
<> R.R.B
<> I.E.S ...etc.,
When you apply for the I.E.S .. you will need to Choose the "" MECHANICAL ENGINEERING "" STREAM
