    Re: Which subjects should I choose for IAS exam as optional(s)? I am studying 2nd year B.Tech (CSE)

    Examination Pattern for UPSC civil service examination : There will be following sections in examination

    * Preliminary Examination : There will be two different papers conducted in objective type pattern and each paper contains 200 marks and papers are - General Studies and CSAT and qualifying in this exam is compulsory to be eligible for next stage of the selection process and if you could not qualify then you will be declared as failed in this exam and will not be allowed to apply for any further process

    * Mains Examination : There will be following papers conducted in this examination and qualifying in each paper is compulsory and all papers will be conducted in conventional type pattern

    * Paper I - Essay - 200 marks and English Comprehension and Precis - 100 marks

    * Paper II - General Studies - 250 marks

    * Paper III - General Studies - 250 marks

    * Paper IV - General Studies - 250 marks

    * Paper V - General Studies - 250 marks

    * Paper VI - Optional Paper I - 250 marks

    * Paper VII - Optional Paper I - 250 marks

    Optional paper is for that subject which you will choose as your optional for mains exam and you may choose any one subject from the following list of subjects and may appear for mains exam

    * Agriculture
    * Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
    * Anthropology
    * Botany
    * Chemistry
    * Civil Engineering
    * Commerce and Accountancy
    * Economics
    * Electrical Engineering
    * Geography
    * Geology
    * History
    * Law
    * Management
    * Mathematics
    * Mechanical Engineering
    * Medical Science
    * Physics
    * Philosophy
    * Political Science & International Relations
    * Psychology
    * Public Administration
    * Sociology
    * Statistics
    * Zoology

    Dear you may also opt for any literature subject but you are engineering stream student so that you can not choose any literature subject because to choose that subject, you need to complete your degree with any literature subject as specialization at graduation level but you should think about your degree relevant subject in this examination as you have mentioned that you are from CSE stream then there is no computer subject available in the list but when you are from engineering then you may choose any one of the following

    * Electrical Engineering
    * Civil Engineering
    * Mechanical Engineering

    And if you do not choose engineering subject then you may choose any one from the following for good preparation

    * Economics
    * Geography
    * History
    * Public Administration
    * Political Science & International Relations
    * Sociology

    If you choose History or Geography then both of these subjects will be helpful for you in the preparation for both prelims and mains exam and you will get good command over this subject if you will read it again and again that is why you should read the contents before selection and when you see any interesting subject then choose and start preparation for this exam and prelims exam is going to be conducted at 26th May 2013 and if you have applied for it then be aware about the left time and prepare well

    I have attached notification of this exam please download for more information

    All the best
