In the UPSC Prelims exams, there is no optional papers.
There are just two Papers and both are complusory.
Both these Papers are in objective mode.

In the Mains exams you can choose two optional papers from the below list of papers:
    Agriculture
    Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
    Anthropology
    Botany
    Chemistry
    Civil Engineering
    Commerce and Accountancy
    Economics
    Electrical Engineering
    Geography
    Geology
    History
    Law
    Management
    Mathematics
    Mechanical Engineering
    Medical Science
    Philosophy
    Physics
    Political Science and International Relations
    Psychology
    Public Administration
    Sociology
    Statistics
    Zoology

Your major subjects that you have studies in your Graduation and Post Graduation is not in the list of the Optional subjects.
SO you should choose the subject in which you can understand the topics

choice of subjects purely depemds upon your individual interest., since you have studied microbiology and biotechnology you can opt botony, zoology, medical science or animal husbandry. These subjects are somewhat releated to your field., so they can be easy for you to tackle.
    All the best!

dear friend , according to my advice please choose a subject in which you are more interested. if your interested subject is related to your graduation so you can choose it from optional list of subjects. for more info : www.upsc.gov.in best of luck...

    hello

as you are from life science background, you can go with botany, zoology, agriculture, animal husbandry ,psychology, sociology etc as optional subject

so that you will fell easy while preparing for the exam,it saves time and you can remember easily and understand the concept very well right

    or

in degree you might be having 3 main subjects right, one biotechnology and others two may chemistry ,or other then you can also choose chemistry as optional subject

**People with clear, written goals accomplish far more in a shorter period of time than people without them can ever imagine""

    good luck

    thank you
