Without any coaching is tough but not impossible.

You should keep reading news papers first.

Read India's struggle for independence by Bipin Chandra. If you are science graduate then you can start studying physics, chemistry, mathematics, geography and economics as well.

Read NCERT books. and practice on that. agriculture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering etc. are optional subjects for the Mains exam.

Go through IAS planner, and magazine available on www.upscportal.com

    All the best.

As your mechanical engineering student so make a good command over different mechanical engineering subjects which will be taught to you semester by semester. For this you may visit UPSC official website (www.upsc.gov.in) and download syllabus and previous years question papers. After the semester is over study those subjects of your branch papers which are in UPSC syllabus and solve questions. In this way you can complete your optional paper of civil service examination.

Develop a habit of reading newspaper it will improve your English enhance your vocabulary and comprehension skills.Besides this it will keep you updated about current affairs.Read Pratigyogita Drapan also to be updated wit current affairs.Give some time for solving aptitude questions

Dear aspirant, to crack IAS exam without coaching is difficult but can be done. You must make a time table such that you can give equal time to all the subjects. You must work according to it as it proves out to be benificial at the time of the exam. You should read History,Geography and you must develope a habbit of reading newspaper daily for the current affairs and good vocabulary.
