    UPSC civil service examination is conducted in 3 stages.
    Preliminary exam:
    All candidates have to appear for 2 papers in this exam irrespective of your educational background
    1) General studies ( includes questions from Indian Economy, polity, current affairs of India &world, Environment & Ecology related, ANcient and medieval Indian history, freedom movement, world & Indian geography (physical, economic ) )
    2) CSAT (civil services aptitude)
    The above 2 papers are compulsory for all candidates.
    Mains exam:
    candidates can take 2 optional subjects from the list of UPSC approved subjects. The following is the list of optional subjects
    AgricultureAnimal Husbandry & Veterinary Science
    Anthropology
    Botany
    Chemistry
    Civil Engineering
    Commerce and Accountancy
    Economics
    Electrical Engineering
    Geography
    Geology
    History
    Law
    Management
    Mathematics
    Mechanical Engineering
    Medical Science
    Philosophy
    Physics
    Political Science and International relations
    Psychology
    Public Administration
    Sociology
    Statistics
    Zoology
    Literature of one of the following languages :
    Arabic, Assamese, Bodo, Bengali, Chinese, Dogri, English, French, German,
    Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri,
    Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Pali, Persian,Punjabi, Russian, Sanskrit, Santali, Sindhi,
    Tamil, Telugu, Urdu.

    You are free to take any 2 optionals as your wish. But you cannot take certain combinations of subjects as given in the following list.
    (a)Political Science & International Relations and Public Administration;
    (b) Commerce & Accountancy and Management;
    (c) Anthropology and Sociology;
    (d) Mathematics and Statistics;
    (e) Agriculture and Animal Husbandry &Veterinary Science.
    (f) Management and Public Administration;
    (g) Of the Engineering subjects, viz., Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering
    and Mechanical Engineering–not more than one subject.
    (h) Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science and Medical Science.

    There is no compulsion that you should take mechanical Engineering subject since you did graduation in that subject. UPSC does not restrict candidates to choose optionals according to their educational background. So you can choose subjects which you are interested to study.

    Apart from 2 optional subjects the following subjects are compulsory in mains
    1) General studies (2 papers)2) Essay
    3) English
    4) any one Indian language
    The last 2 subjects in the above list are only qualifying nature, ie in these 2 subjects you have to obtain the minimum pass marks only. Your score in those 2 papers will not be counted for your overall score in the mains examination.
