Fror the UPSC Civil Service exams,the selection procedure is divide into 3 parts.
1. PRELIMS
It consists of 2 compulsory papers,of objective nature,MCQ's of duration 2hrs per paper.The syllabus covered is history,world geography,current affairs,general studies,basic Maths,comprehension ability,logical ability,aptitude,etc.
2. MAINS.
It basically consists of subjective type questions for the two subjects you have selected.It requires detailed severe study of your subjects conquering all areas in them.
3. INTERVIEW.
After crossing the first 2 exams,u face the final hurdle-the interview.

IAS exam in conducted in several steps. First there is the IAS preliminary, after qualifying that one can appear in the main exam.
The IAS written exam consists of nine papers of total marks 2000.

The Notification of this year Civil services examination was already declared and the last date of apply for this examination online was already over, the preliminary examination will be conducted soon on 20/May/2012. The IPS(Indian Police service) and IAS(Indian Administrative Service) are the All India civil services. The UPSC conduct the exam exams every year for IPS & IAS.
The IPS exams devided in to 3 stages.
1.Preliminary:
The preliminary exam consist of 2 compulsory paper of 200 marks each& of 2 hours duration each.The questions are of objective types.
2.Main Exam Or Written Exam:
The written examination consist of 3 papers of 200 marks each and of 3 hour duration each.The questions of of written examination will be conventional eassay type.
3.Interview:
Then the interview is of 200 marks.The aim of the interview is to assess the suitability of a candidate for a career in public service.The interview is mainly judge the mental ability,the intellectual qualities & their personality.
The preliminary exam is just a qualifying exam for the final exam & score obtained in this exam are Not added to the final result.
