Civil services exam is conducted by UPSC(Union Public Service Commission)
this exam held once in a year.
To clearing this exam there are three stage and If you want to become an IAS officer all stage are compulsory.
There are three stage
prelim exam
main exam
interview
prelim exam are the basic exam which is held in the month of may in every year.
mains exam are the exam on 2nd stage only those candidate can give this exam who clear prelim exam in that year.
next and last stage is interview stage. for interview only those candidate are eligible who clear the above two stage in that year.

After clearing the preliminary exam then upsc gives the application form for the mains exam.
You fill the optional subject which you are selected from the subject list.
One thing is more if the one time you fill the application form and submit it, then you cannot change the subject.
The eight paper held in the mains exam
One is the English exam
One is the language paper (optional subject)
Two papers are the general study
Four paper from your two optional subjects.

After clearing prelims, one has to give mains exam which is subjective in nature. It consists of 9 papers:
1- GS (2 papers)
2- English and Regional language papers( both qualifying)
3- Essay
4- First subject (2 papers)
5- Second subject(2 papers)
After clearing mains, there is interview round, then a medical test, then final result, then joining in September. Then, training for minimum 2 years.
And after all this, it depends on you if you want to work or sit at homeJust joking.

Complete Procedure to Become an IAS Officer or Civil Officer :
Preliminary Exam : Objective type - 2 papers contains 400 marks : If you have qualified in the preliminary exam then you have to apply for mains exam.
Mains Exam : After qualifying the prelims you would be allowed for mains exam and you will have to apply or mains exam at the official website of UPSC - www.upsc.gov.in and in mains exam you would be offered to choose any two subjects for your mains exam the pattern would be as - One paper would be conducted for Any Indian Language, One For Essay and One would be separate for English Language then you would have to qualify two papers of General Studies and there would be 4 various papers conducted for your selected subjects means those two subjects which you will select for mains exam means each subject has 2 papers and the total marks for all 9 papers are - 2000.
Interview Process : If you qualify the mains exam too then you would be called for face an interview process and if you successfully qualify the interview process also then you would be selected for IAS officer post.
Training : After the final selection you would be sent to some big and reputed institutes and universities and colleges and other organizations for training and you have to complete your training in 2 years and if you fail in the exam of training then you would be given one more year to complete that so prepare hard for your mains and interview and get selected.

UPSC conducts the Civil Services Exam(CSE) every year.
Recruitments are made to 24 services/posts.
After selection in the final merit list you can get posts like IAS,IFS,IPS,IRS,etc.
CSE is conducted in 3 stages :
1.Prelims/CSAT Exam-CSAT stands for Civil Services Aptitude Test.It is conducted to shortlist
candidates for Mains Exam.It consists of 2 papers of General studies of 200 marks each i.e. Total marks is 400 marks.
After clearing the Prelims Stage of CSE you have to appear in the Mains Exam and finally Interviews.
2.Mains Exam-is conducted to test the indepth knoweledge and intellegence of the candidates.
At this stage choice of 2 Optional Subjects has to be made and 2 papers of each optional subject has to be prepared.
Mains exams consists of total 9 Papers and total weightage is 2000 marks.
3.Interviews-is the test of personality of candidates and is of total 300 marks.
It is the final stage of selection and candidates are ranked in a merit list according to their performance
and assigned the various posts/services.So a good rank is necessary in the CSE to get posts like IAS,IPS,IFS,etc.
CSE 2013 Exam notification is expected on 02.02.2013 and Prelims/CSAT exam will be held on 19.05.2013.Eligibility For CSE :

civil service exam is one of the prestigious exam conducted by UPSC every year.The Exam consist of 3 stages.
1.Preliminary:-the preliminary exam usually conducted in Month of May.The exam shall no comprise of 2 compulsory paper of 200 marks each & of 2 hrs duration each.The questions are of objective types.
It is just a qualifying exam.
2.Main exam(written):-
candidate are allow to choose 2 optional subjects in main exam.All the question papers for the exam will be essay type.Each paper will be 3 hrs duration .
