UPSC have two types of written exams that is prelim and mains exam. First you will have to face prelim examination. This exam has two papers of objective types questions. These two papers have 200 marks each i.e. 400 marks total exam. If you will selected in this examination then you will be appear in upsc mains examination. The objective types questions are coming from General Knowledge, Current affairs, History of India, National Movements, Geography of India, Maths of 10th level, Economic of India, Reasoning, English etc.

In upsc mains examination you have to face 9 papers in which 1st paper of language paper like Hindi, Marathi, Urdu etc of 300 marks, 2nd paper of English of 300 marks, 3rd paper of essay of 200 marks. Paper 4 and 5 is of general studies of 300 marks each and paper 6 to 9 are for two optional subjects you have to choose from list like sociology, Physics, History etc. These papers are of 300 marks each. For viewing the list of optional subject click here

After that you when you will select in Mains then you will be appeared in Interview. In the Interview you should have up-to-date your current affairs knowledge. For it you have to read newspapers and newspapers editorial page to know the view of good expert. Remember you have to be asked your own view on current affairs in the interview. Best of luck.

    Hi

PRELIMINARY EXAM :- This is an objective type exam.It is just like a entrance exam which is taken for entering in the UPSC exams.

It has two papers 1.General Studies & 2.General Aptitude.

After clearing this exam you will be allowed to sit in the Mains exam.

MAINS EXAM:- This is the Main exam of UPSC. After clearing this exam you will be called for Interview.

It has 9 papers. Some of them is Objective type and some are subjective types.

So you must have clear the Main Exam for entering in the Interview.

This is the Main difference between these two exams.

So do not confuse in it.
