The UPSC conducts the CSAT examination every year for IAS. The age limit for it is 21-30years. The upper age limit is three years for OBC and five years for SC/ST candidates. There is also 4 attempts for general candidates, 7attempts for OBC candidates and the SC/ST candidates can apply till their upper age limit. So if you want to apply then you have to first appear preliminary examination where there are two papers, i.e. General Study and English comprehension. After success in prel. you can attend main with two optional paper. you can choose your electronics engg. as your one optional subject. So you have to work hard for it and know all about the syllabus of it. To know more you can visit www.upsc.gov.in

Re: What should I do for becoming an IAS officer? I am pursuing 3rd year B.E in Electronics and Communication Engineering. In what way does engineering help me to clear UPSC Civil Services exam?

First of all currently you are in third year of your engineering so that you are not eligible for the UPSC IAS exam now because you don't fulfill the eligibility criteria for the exam .

For giving a Civil Service Exam one should have to complete the below criteria .

=> one must be an indian citizen

=> one complete the graduation from any recognized university or in the final year of graduation .

=> age must be 21-30 for general cast , 3 years relaxation for obc cast , 5 years relaxation for sc/st cast , 10 years relaxation for physically handicapped .

So as you are currently in third year so that you still wait one year to eligible for the exam .

In CSE exam there are three parts .
    1) preliminary exam
    2) main exam
    3) interview

    Preliminary exam consist two papers
    1.General Study
    2. English & Maths
and one should pass this exam for qualifying for the next round .

Main exam consists 9 descriptive type paper
1-Any language defined in constitution of India
    2-english
    3-essay
    4-general study
    5-general study
    6-optional subject-1
    7-optional subject-1
    8-optional subject-2
    9-optional subject-2

At last there will be interview .

Now for the main exam you have to select any two optional subjects from the below list .
    Agriculture
    Management
    Animal Husbandry & Vetinary Science
    Mathematics
    Anthropology
    Mechanical Engineering
    Botany
    Medical Science
    Chemistry
    Philosophy
    Civil Engineering
    Physics
    Commerce & Accountancy
    Political Science & International Relations
    Economics
    Psychology
    Electrical Engineering
    Public Administration
    Geography
    Sociology
    Geology
    Statistics
    Indian History
    Law
    Zoology

In engineering you studied maths so that you feel better in that subject if you choose it as your optional subject .

Other subject you may select based on your interest because there are no your branch related subject .

So you have to select other subject based on your interest .

You may give the IES exam because every engineer are eligible for the IES exam and also there are one category for the Electronics & Communication branch .

So choose your subject and start the preparation accordingly .

    good luck
