Dear Aspirant,
~I would like to inform you that the pattern of the preliminary exams of the Civil Services exams are not to undergo any changes. The changes suggested are limited to the Mains exam only, and this is very likely to take place very soon.
~The changes involved include the removal of giving preference to any subject in particular. It will make the subjects more inter disciplinary and the candidates will have to pay equal importance to every subject.
~Hence, you need not worry of any changes in the pattern of Preliminary exams.
TO DO WELL IN THE PRELIMINARY EXAM:::
~success in these examinations is basically related to lots of practice and core knowledge.
-You need to practice a lot of basic numerical, reasoning and aptitude based questions,Grammatical English and comprehension.
-You can learn social studies including History,Civics and Geography from books you have been studying since class 6th.
However NCERT Books are preferred because of their proper contents and proper representation.
AS PER YOUR GENERAL STUDIES,YOU NEED TO TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING.
~Read newspaper daily.I would prefer THE HINDU because of its excellent English and good GK contents. Also BBC News Channel keeps you connected with the entire world.
-Get subscribed to the monthly magazine PRATIYOGITA DARPAN.It has a proven success among students.
-Talk about current affairs with your friends. This is one of the easiest and interesting way to learn.
IF YOU KEEP YOURSELF GENERALLY AWARE,THEN NO ONE CAN STOP YOU SUCCEED.
GOOD LUCK!!
first i want to clear you that the syllabus of prelim's not changed but the paper pattern of it has been changed after 2010, now prelim's also called as CSAT(which comprises only two paper's 1.GENERAL ABILITY & 2.ENGLISH comprehension) now upsc doesnot conduct additional paper of optional subjects in prelim's as though now it is become much easier to prepare for PRELIM's.
so,don't panic rather go for study

Hi friend!!
As of now, the prelims paper hasn't changed from 2011.
In the general studies paper, questions on anything under the sun could be asked.
None can master everything.
Question papers of the previous years are our sole guide in the matter.
I wish you all SUCCESS!
