sir kindly refer English literature is one of the optional subjects given by UPSC Literature of one of the following languages can be taken as an optional Arabic, Assamese, Bodo, Bengali, Chinese, Dogri, English, French, German,Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri,Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Pali, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Sanskrit, Santali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu. this is the passage which i copied from upsc notification. There are IAS officers who have cleared this exam with English literature as an optional according to 61st annual report of UPSC, 41 candidates have appeared in English literature optional exam in 2009 mains you can refer UPSC main timetable for 2012 also, you can see English literature as an optional kindly read the notification again sir (page number 5)
