you can choose any of the subjects for the UPSC exam.

But you have done your graduation from engineering then you must have to choose any one of the subjects for the Mains exam.

you can choose any exam.

you can choose your optional subject as other of your engineering stream.

according to my view,
you have chose those optional subject in which you have full interest of your field related subject.

You can choose any optionals for your exam and you can choose in a way that you are comfortable in them and yes you can choose the optional other than your engineering subjects and you can check the details for the optionals at www.upsc.gov.in


And the difference between the optional and compulsory is:

* For optional you have choice to choose among the list of subjects given...

* For complusory you don't have choice you have to do it..

Well dear as you are a b.tech graduate hence you can take your engineering branch also for the mains as a optional subject.
<>as you are asking about subjects othe than your graduation. yes you are allowed to take which you have not studied in your graduation.you can take humanities subjects as they will be interesting.they will not put extrat pressure on you also.
