Re: Which optional subjects suits a computer science engineer best to succeed in Civil Services Exam? 1) See, the syllabus in UPSCs Civil Services Examination is vast. It is normally found that it takes between 1 1.5 years to effectively cover the entire syllabus (from the perspective of cracking the examination). This is wherein the aspirant is dedicated towards the goal and spends quality time (6 8 hours) studying consistently over that period of time. 2) If you are completely afresh to civil services, then maybe seriously targeting 2014 would be a better strategy. However, even in that case you should start immediately with the preparation. 3) Regarding taking 2013 attempt: See, an attempt is counted only if you appear in the exam. That does not hold you back from filling the application form. You should start preparation immediately. You can also fill up the application form and evaluate your preparation right before the Preliminary Examination. In case you feel prepared and ready to handle 2013 you can go and give your first attempt, or else do not go and continue with preparation for 2014. 4) Initiate preparation in all the compulsory papers of the exam which are both the papers of Prelims (Paper I and Paper II) and General Studies and Essay of the Mains. For optional subjects, consider/evaluate your interest among subjects like Pub Ad, Political Science, Sociology, Geography and History. These are the ones which are the most successful, opted by majority of students and are strategically complimentary with the syllabus of General Studies.

Re: Which optional subjects suits a computer science engineer best to succeed in Civil Services Exam? Hello, There is a process to choose optionals. You must follow it to get the best ones for YOU. Firstly, strike out the subjects from the complete list that you think you can't take in any circumstances. Secondly, go through the syllabus of each of remaining subjects and select the ones that you think you can manage. Thirdly, ask your more than one seniors who have actually given the exam with those subjects. Finally, make the decision about the subjects. Mind it, the final decision will be yours and it must be based more on your interest in the subject, availability of good study material, availability of good tutor/guide in case you need some help during your preparation. Don't go by the experience of a single person. If you have right frame of mind, right approach, you can crack UPSC with any subject of YOUR choice. Thanks, goyalk
