you can choose MECHANICAL ENGINEERING and MATHEMATICS as optional subjects in MAIN EXAM.
other wise you can choose PHYSICS/CHEMISTRY/HISTORY/PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION/GEOGRAPHY.

Optional Subjects for the Main Examination:


Agriculture,
Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science,
Botany,
Chemistry,
Civil Engineering,
Commerce and Accountancy,
Economics,
Electrical Engineering,
Geography,
Geology,
History,
Law,
Management,
Mathematics,
Mechanical Engineering,
Medical Science,
Philosophy,
Physics,
Political Science and International Relations,
Psychology,
Public Administration,
Sociology,
Statistics,
Zoology.

The following combinations not allowed are:


Political Science & International Relations and Public Administration
Commerce and Management
Anthropology and Sociology
Maths and Statistics
Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
Management and Public Administration
Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science and Medical Science
Any two branches of engineering.

The selection procedure for the IAS involves
written exam
personnel interview.
The written exam includes preliminary aptitude exam and main exam. The aptitude exam is common for all the aspirant. The main exam consist of 9 papers of which four compulsory papers are general studies 1 and 2, english and essay.
There are many optional papers and you can choose them as per your wish. But it would be better if you choose them as per your degree course. The various paper are mathematics, political science, animal husbandry, statistics, economics, botany, chemistry, physics, zoology , civil engineering, mechanical engineering, agriculture etc.
Mention your degree course to help you better by specifying the subjects.

Friend,
As you are a mechanical engineering student,according to me the best subject combination for you to choose will be a science subjct and an arts subjct.
You can be thorough with PHYSICS contents,as you are more prone to it and it wont affect your schedule much.
as the other option,I advice you to choose PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION as it is a highly scoring subject and also keeps you in pace with the way the union works.HISTORY can also be a good option.

The optional selection should be done based up on your interest

things to be remembered as a mechanical student

you have the optional subjects which are related to your branch i.e., Mechanical and Electrical

but there is a limitation for you i.e., you have to select only one optional Engineering subject

The Mechanical student mostly selects Mechanical and Public Administration

or Mechanical and Psychology

or Mechanical and Mathematics

In this way most of Mechanical student optional selection

There is no neccessity to choose mechanical for sure if you are not interested in selecting mechanical then you may ignore this subject and select what subject you want

Hello,
If you want to appear in IES examination, you should follow the Mechanical Branch syllabus. But if you want to appear in IAS/IPS exam then you can take subjects through any stream, with Science stream you can take Physics, Maths/Biology and chemistry, in arts you can take Psychology, Sociology, History, Political Science etc.

First you think that in which exam you want to appear IES or IAS after that you can see the latest syllabus through UPSC official website. You can apply online in UPSC Exams.

You can also apply in exams when you will appear in your final examination of University.
