First, you need to know what is UPSC.

UPSC is Union Public Service Commission which conducts many exams in which Civil Service Exam(CSE).

CSE has a misnomer as 'IAS exam' or 'UPSC exam'.

You can have all the details abot the CSE at http://www.upsc.gov.in/

You can choose whatever you like.

Yes, you can choose Geography and Economics as your optional subjects.

Don't depend on what others recommend you to study, choose in what you're interested.

Yes you can choose the above subjects

And for the upsc exam here is the criteria:

The candidate must be pass in graduation from a recognized indian university

And the age limits is 21-30 and for the obc relaxation 3 years

And for the sc.st the relaxation is 5 years

And for the preparation of the exam

For the preparation of the gk read the lucent book which is best

And for the preparation of the economics

Can purchase the arihant book which is best

And also for the gk can read daily a national news paper

And for the economics can read the ncert books of 7 to 10th

you will going to miss this year's UPSC exam as APPLICATION DATE HAS BEEN already gone.

you can visit regularily on official website of UPSC for regular updates/or read newspaper daily for notifications.

I will suggests you

to choose HISTORY instead of ECONOMICS because history will help you more in prelim's examination beside all othr your option 's are good to compete at al stages.

i have short listed some information so you check them


eligibility criteria are as follows to give this exam

1. must be university graduate form reconised university or equivalent.
2.Age criteria :
-One should be in the age group of 21-30 years by 1st August of the year in which the examination is going to be conducted.
-Relaxation in upper age limit upto 3 years for the candidates of OBC
-Relaxation in upper age limit upto 5 years for the candidates of SC/ST.
-Relaxation in upper age limit upto 5 years for Ex-service man.


3. indian nationality is must or subject of it.

tips
1.choose two optionals carefully & start improving writing in them, do practice to write answers in essay manners in particularily these two subjects atleast.
2. learn NCERT BOOKS FROM class III to XII,fro the general studies.
3.start reading two good level competitive magazines like compeptition success review,prtiyogita darpan,frontline for the current affairs.
4.purchase a good ATLAS,learn it heartly.
5.order correspondance study material (though it is optional upto you)

To know, all about UPSC please, visit www.upsc.gov.in.
At first, for the preparation of GK you go for NCERT Books but for Optional Subjects- It's better to choose those subjects which are opted in Degree level because of familiarity its feel easy to prepare the same.

Dear, General Knowledge is not an optional subject, it is a compulsory subject, But if you are ease with geography and economics then go ahead....
