Dear it is most compulsory that if you qualify the preliminary examination of civil service/forest service then you will have to appear for your mains exam only in english medium means this rule it made by the UPSC board and if you qualify the prelims of Forest service then you will have to write your mains examination only in English Medium means there is no chance for you to choose any other medium of test and for your information i have attached the complete notification of this recruitment which is released by the UPSC board at 5th march and you should go to the page number 16 of this notification and there you will get the complete details about the examination and examination pattern of UPSC Indian Forest service

Preliminary examination for IFoS : Two papers for 400 marks in objective type pattern and qualifying in prelims is compulsory and this paper would be set in both Hindi and English Medium

Mains examination : There would be 6 papers conducted in mains examination and you have to qualify each paper in conventional type mode and these papers would be set only in English Medium and papers are as

    1. General Knowledge - 300 marks
    2. General English - 300 marks

Paper 3, 4, 5 & 6 would be conducted on the basis of those two subjects which would be selected by the candidate in the application form and all the subjects are listed in the notification which is attached please download and get details

    All the best

    Hi
    According to the new pattern
English is not compulsory for the mains exam
you could even write it using local language
but ofcourse English is given preference
so prepAre English also as you now need to give the preliminary exam
    so english is must

this is according to the last news.......
Changes are regularly made to make the pattern best
for that keep yourself update from the newspaper
