Re: Can I choose history as optional subject for IAS exam being a B.Tech graduate? What is the actual use of optional subject? yes, you can choose History as your optional subject for IAS being a Engineering graduate in ECE. because according to UPSC you can choose any optional subject from the list of subjects and there is no matter you have studied the subject or not. for IAS you have to writer Civil Services exam that is conducted by UPSC. According to new rules of UPSC for Civil Services General Studies papers are given more weightage than optional subject. And now there is no optional subject in prelims and you have to choose only one optional subject from the list of optional subjects for Mains exam instead of two optional subject. Civil Services exam constitutes three parts: 1. CSAT(Prelims) 2. Mains 3. Interview for appearing in Civil Services exam your age must be within 21 years to 30 years. there is also applicable relaxation in upper age limit for reserved categories according to government norms. Generally any one from History and Geography Subjects are suggested to choose as optional subjects because it will be very helpful in prelims and Mains also. you are required to prepare separate for these subjects for General studies. if you choose any one then it will be helpful for you. and don't get puzzled and concentrate on your preparation. The actual use of the optional subject is that it is the chance given by UPSC to explore yourself and opportunity to get higher marks because it is your own choice. It is chance for you to do best in your core field. Good Luck...
Re: Can I choose history as optional subject for IAS exam being a B.Tech graduate? What is the actual use of optional subject? You can choose any subject as optional paper from the list provided by UPSC for Civil service exam.As your engineering paper i.e. Electronics and Communication is not among the subject list, you have to choose some other subject. And about all that bla bla,if you would have given slight attention to those Bla bla you would have started your preparation..People generally suggest History or Geography or Public administration as Optional subject because you need to prepare these subjects anyways for the other papers in the Mains and also in the prelims exam. Moreover the contents of history or Geography will not change so you need not remain updated every year and if you practice very well for last 10 15year papers you would see nearly similar question papers. That is why these subjects are suggested. Optional paper is the one paper which is your own selection and that gives you the extra opportunity to increase your marks. The other papers regarding Economy,Current affairs,Geography,Indian culture etc are common for all.But Optional paper and literature papers will be your own choice whichever subject you feel that you are better than most.So the selection of that paper is most vital part and it should not be left for selection after clearing the prelims.Think carefully and select from the list.Join a good coaching class and then go for Civil service 2014.Check the website of UPSC to get previous few year question papers in various subjects in Civil services exam.
