The General Knowledge question is asked in UPSC in both prelim and mains exam. The G.K. questions will come from Current Affairs mostly, so you have to read the newspaper in the daily basis. If you up-to-date the current affairs then most questions you can solve. The another area from which the G.K. questions come is History of India, National Movements, Indian and World Geography, Physical social Economic Geography of India.

Other Areas for G.K. are General issues on environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change, General Sciences etc. Means you have to get all questions from, History, Geography, Economics, Civics, Physics 10 level, Chemistry, Biology, Science and Technology, Sports, etc.

And yes G.K is subject and a compulsory also

So you have to read the gk subject must

And you have to purchase some good books

-For the preparation of g.k purchase the book lucent book

-And also for the current gk purchase monthly the pratiyogita darpan book

-And also read daily a national news paper

-Or even can watch a national news channel too
