There is common entrance exam conducted for recruitment to IAS & IPS services which is conducted by Union Public Service Commission & known as "Civil Service Exam".
-To become an IAS or IPS, you need to crack this examination. To appear in this exam you should have completed bachelor degree course in any stream from recognized university or Final year in Bachelor degree program. Your age should be in between 21 to 30 years. Both male & female candidates appear in this exam.
Civil Service Exam has 3- stages...1. Preliminary Exam 2. Main Exam 3. Interview
Number of attempts allowed for Civil Service Exam:
4 attempts for General category candidates.
7 attempts for Obc category candidates
14 attempts for SC/ST category candidates.

Date of issuing of application form: 04.02.2012
Last date of receipt of Application: 05.03.2012
Date of Preliminary Exam: 20.05.2012
Date of Main Exam: 15.10.2012
Pattern of Civil Service Preliminary Exam
Paper I:
- Current events of national and international importance
- Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
- Economic and Social Development %u2013 Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
- General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change.
- General Science.
- History of India and Indian National Movement
- Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.
- Indian Polity and Governance � Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public
Paper II:
- Comprehension
- General mental ability
- Basic numeracy
- English Language Comprehension skills.
- Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills
- Interpersonal skills & communication skills
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability
- Decision making and problem solving
