the civil services exam is conducted in two stages .
PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION
MAINS EXAMINATION

for the mains examination the aspirants have to select two subjects
from the list of subjects allowed by upsc for the MAINS EXAMINATION.

as you mentioned you have opted public administration as one of your subject for this examination
and the second optional subject is something you are confused about.

i think you should go for the electrical engineering as this was your course and
you will easily get through the ups and downs of the subjects .
sociology is an arts subjects and can be considered as a scoring subjects but that not your field of subject
you have really work hard if you take this as your second optional subject for the upsc civil services MAINS EXAMINATION.
while if you still not get through your confusion then
here is the
list of subjects you can opt for the mains examination.

Agriculture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science,

Commerce and Accountancy, Economics, Electrical Engineering,

Public Administration, Sociology, Statistics, Zoology

Literature of one of the following languages:
Arabic, Assamese, Bodo, Bengali, Chinese,
Dogri, English, French, German, Gujarati,
Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili,
Malayalam, Manipur, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya,
Pali, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Sanskrit,
Santali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu.

Dear Friend

Being a ECE engineer you should choose the Electrical engineering subject for the mains as you have become a recent graduate so this subject would be just revising you graduation notes..

While for sociology you have to start from the beginning..

You can also choose maths as the second option

according to my point of view as you are an engineering student and complete your graduation with electrical engineering than you should take electrical engineering as your second optional subject .

because s it is in your graduation subject that means you have a good knowledge about it and by doing some hard work on it you can command on it ,

so i think this is the batter option for you.

First of all i tell you that the syllabus for the main exam is graduation level .
You studied sociology in 11th only then you don't study it .
So On the basis of only one time you study , it is not good for you to take as a second optional subject .
Because you have to study upto graduation level in that subject .

For electrical subject , you know the basis things related to electrical .
Even you studied the electrical in 11-12 th also and also in secondary .
You know the most of the things , so it is better for you to select this subject .
Because you need less preparation compared to Sociology subject .

Even electrical is very interesting subject so for my opinion you should take electrical as a second optional subject .

Still last decision depends on you , whatever you have interest choose that and prepare for that .

sociology is one of the best and popular for the ias mains exam. your optional subject combination is to good. you took as the sociology subject 2nd optional subject. public administration with sociology is a good combination for civil service exam. the study material of both paper is easily available in the market and internet.

as you have opted Public Administration as first optional subject. and choosing other optional subject from Electrical Engineering and Sociology is based on your knowledge of these subjects. first go through the syllabus and previous year question papers of both exams and estimate the time how much time you have to prepare. but as you said you have knowledge of EE and you want to desire for sociology so i would recommend you to go for EE because you have knowledge of it and it would be helpful for you.

i am ece student ...confused in selection of optional-2 subject
sir i have opted public administration as optional-1
but totally confused for optional-2
whether i should take electrical as i am having some knowledge regarding it
but there is two topic which i have to prepare myself as it is not part of ece syllabus
while i had studied 11th sociology ncert book ...and found it interesting and have
desired to know more in it...
so suggest me whether only by reading one book ...on basis of this i should opt for sociology
also i have much inner desire to know more in it
