    Dear friend,

generally for prelims exam you should do more extensive study.you should try to know about more topics.

on the other hand for mains exam you should more intensive study.you should go indepth study of the syllabus.

generally it is said if you are fully prepared for mains you can easily crack the prelims exam.

for prelims the approach is to solve the objective type questions so if you can able to identify the answer it is enough but for mains you should be able to write answers.

    all the best

yes, for prelims you have to cover all the topics , ie a more extensive study is required.
for mains not only extensive but in depth study of each subject is required. Further for mains, you should have lot of writing practice, able to form your opinion on various issues.

Yes. In prelim exam you have to prepare for general subjects but you will have to choose in main exams. Prelim exams are fully objective while main exams subjects are optional. There are 51 optional subjects. 23 from mains and 28 from languages.

    Dear,

but in the mains exam you have number of the exam has given

    your optional subject-4 exam
    general studies-2exam
    your language-1 exam
    english language-1 paper.

so you make the different different strategy for the mains and preliminary exam.

Re: Is there any need to maintain difference between UPSC Prelims preparation and Mains preparation?

Yes of course for prelims exam you have to prepare for general study and general subjects but for mains exam you have to choose the subjects. I have to describe how.

There are two types of written examination in UPSC.

UPSC Prelim exam and UPSC Mains exam. You will appear in UPSC Prelim exam first in which Objective type Questions are asked from General English, General Studies etc.

For UPSC Mains you have to choose Subjects. There are total 51 Optional Subjects in which 23 are from main subjects and 28 Language Subjects like Hindi, English, Bengali etc.

The Preliminary Examination will consist of two papers of Objective type (multiple choice questions) and carry a maximum of 400 marks

The Main Examination will consist of a written examination and an Interview Test. The written examination will consist of 9 papers of conventional essay type.

Syllabus for prelim exam: Current events of national and international importance

History of India and Indian National Movement

Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World

Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc

Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.

General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization

For mains exam you have to choose the subjects.
