In the preliminary exam the only general studies paper held.
In the general study exam following subject/topic covered

1. History
2. Political Science
3. Civic
4. Current Affairs
5. Numerical aptitude
6. Reasoning
7. Social Science
8. General Science
9. Geography
10.international current affairs
11.Indian Economy
12.Arts and culture etc
number of the topic is covered.
In the mains exam one exam is the general study along with the English language paper, and four papers of your two optional subjects.
Preliminary exam is the objective type. mains exam is the subjective type of the paper.

The main difference is the questions asked in the prelims exam are of objective nature but in the mains exam the questions are of descriptive nature.

for the prelims exam you have to do wide extensive study but for the mains exam you have to do selective intensive study.

for prelims exam you dont need any writing skill but in mains your writing skill plays a vital role in your answer writing.so not only knowledge but writing skill is also required for the mains exam.

for prelims level if you recognize the answer it will be enough but for the mains level you should have enogh knowledge to give structured answer.

so accordingly your preparation will also vary.for mains exam you have to work very hard to crack it.

for mains answer writing skill is must and has to be developed if you dont possess.
