Re: When to choose our mains optional subjects? After prelims or before prelims?

you should choose optional subject before mains exam.
Because, the question standard for optional subject is that of honours degree level, that is higher level than bachelor's degree and lower than master's degree.
Preliminary exam is conducted on may month.
Result on last week of July or 1st week of august
Mains exam is on october month.
So time gap between prelims and mains is hardly 4 months. Within this time gap, you cannot prepare for 2 optional subjects in the standard of honor's degree level. Plus in these 4 months you have to concentrate more on current affairs, which forms 70% of questions in General studies paper.
So it is impossible to study optionals after mains.
Take a firm decision on optionals well in advance before prelims and start preparing. ALL THE BEST

    dear friend,

according to mine knowledge you have to choose optional subjects before the Civil Services Prelims exam because while filling the forum you are asked to select optional subjects for Mains.

you must choose optional subjects on the basis of your knowledge in the subjects and your interest in the subjects. because it will be beneficial for you for preparation and cracking the exam.

    Good Luck....

Re: When to choose our mains optional subjects? After prelims or before prelims?

    Dear Friend,

As far as i am concerned you should choose the MAINS Optional subjects before the preliminary exam instead of choosing it after the prelims.

This is because if you choose the optional subjects before the prelims then you will have ample time to prepare well for the MAINS Exam too but if you go to choose the optional subjects after the prelims then you have just 90 days to prepare.

So , I Advise you to choose the optional subjects before the preliminary examination.

This is the information i have to the best of my knowledge regarding your query. Hope the information will help you to the extent you want.

Re: When to choose our mains optional subjects? After prelims or before prelims?

You should make the choice of Mains Optional Subjects before your Prelims/CSAT exam.

First, this helps in adequate preparation of the Mains exams as it is very subjective & vast in nature.

Secondly, the time between the results of Prelims and Mains exam is very less and it becomes very difficult

to prepare optional subjects well in such a short time period.

So one should select the optional sujects of the mains exam
before hand and simultaneously prepare for

    Prelims and Mains exams.

    Prelims exam
    is
simpler compared to Mains exams which far more tough & vast.

Prelims exam is only a qualifying exam to shortlist candidates for the mains exams.

The marks of the Mains Written and Interview score is considered to prepare the final Merit list.So to secure a good rank in the CSE

one must do well in the Mains Exam and interviews.

    Hi

    UPSC exams has three stages;

    i)Preliminary Exam

    ii)Main Exam

    iii)Interview

I am not sure about that the subjects are choosen before or after the preliminary exams.

But from my point of view the Subjects are choosed before the preliminary exams.

For more information about the exams you can visit the UPSC website:

Re: When to choose our mains optional subjects? After prelims or before prelims?

    Hello there,

Initially, before prelims when you apply for the exam you are asked to fill in your tentative optional subjects(this is just to put an estimate on the number of people who opt for different subjects.)

Once you've cleared your prelims, you are supposed to fill another application form for the mains, that is when you have to fill the exact optionals that you want for the exam.

    Cheers!!
