Here are some details of the pattern of U.P.S.C. exams which would definitely help you. Firstly you have to appear in preliminary and than after you succeed another step is to appear in main and more details are as follows:

If you had mentioned the exam then it could have been better.
Anyways, generally aptitude and general knowledge is tested.
Sometimes there is a paper related only to Mathematics.
Also, sometimes a paper on the subject related to the type of job for which the exam is being conducted.
So, please tell that regarding which exam you are asking.
Alternatively, you can go through the advertisement of the exam published in the biweekly EMPLOYMENT NEWSPAPER or visit the UPSC website.
The pattern of question asked is divided in many parts...your competence in language is checked..,in two alternative subjects there will be direct questions on your grip toward the subject concern..in Genaral studies your knowledge of different subjects,general awareness is asked..it include history,geography.,general science,political science,economics.,quantitative aptitude,reasoning....Pre exam is objective type,but mains is fully subjective type..
There will be both objective and descriptive questions in UPSE exam.
One day will be for objective 2 sittings.
next day will be for descriptive 2 sittings.
