The Age limit for UPSC exam is 21 to 30 years on 1 August of Exam Year i.e. If you are appearing in 2012 UPSC exam then your age should between 2 August 1982 to 1 August 1991. I suggest you to take Arts Subjects like History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy etc. If you have good writing skills then you can absolutely Crack the Exam. After that you have to go for the Question Pattern of Exam so you should download and print Previous Years Question Papers from www.upsc.gov.in Model Test Papers and Sample Papers are most important for Practice. Re: How should I prepare for civil service exam? Suggest me the best books for same. Civil Service Aptitude Test(CSAT) is to be introduced from this year onwards as a change in the pattern of Civil services examination. Earlier the first stage of Civil services examination was known as the Preliminary exams. From this year onwards , the first stage of the Civil services will be known as Civil Service Aptitude Test(CSAT). CSAT test the candidates skills in sections like mental ability, Quantitative aptitude, Logical reasoning, Data interpretation, analytical ability,Comprehension skills etc. apart from the regular General studies section and current affairs. So the paper will have 2 sections as follows :- - Paper 1 which will test the General awareness of the candidate. - Paper 2 which will test various skills like mental ability, Quantitative aptitude, Logical reasoning, Data interpretation, analytical ability,Comprehension skills. Books which are recommended for the above sections are as follows :- For Paper one you can refer following books :- - NCERT books in subjects like History, Geography, Civics etc. - General Studies Manual by Tata McGraw Hill which is really a good book for this section. - The Pearson CSAT Manual - Manorama Year Book which is refered by many toppers. For paper two you can refer folloing books :- - Quantitative Aptitude By RS Agrawal - Non Verbal Reasoning by RS Agrawal - Cracking CSAT by Arihant Publication which will cover the entire syllabus for CSAT paper two.
