Actually there is no difference between district magistrate and district collector. Both are roles played by the deputy commissioner of an Indian district. In revenue matters like land revenue, taxes and fees the deputy commissioner being the highest officer of revenue administration in the district acts as the 'district collector'. Again the deputy commissioner being the head of criminal administration and supervisor of all executive magistrates in the district, he acts as the 'district magistrate' in matters relating to these issues. Therefore in conclusion both district magistrate and collector are roles vested upon the DC of an Indian district by the constitution of India.

    dear
A District Collector is responsible for the collection of land revenue, other kinds of Government taxes, fees and all dues recoverable as arrears of land revenue. He is responsible for ensuring the maintenance of accurate and uptodate records of rights as regards the land.

whereas A District Magistrate is responsible for the maintenance of law and order in the district. He is the head of criminal administration and supervises all Executive Magistrates in the district and controls and directs the actions of the police. He has supervisory powers over the administration of jails and lock-ups in the district.

    thank you

As far as i am concerned there is no difference between a District Collector and District Magistrate and according to the administrative hierarchy of any particular district sometimes they may be referred as the Deputy Commissioner of that particular district, they are IAS officers, appointed by any Indian State Government.
