After completion of your Graduation you can appear for Civil Services Exam. and than on basis of marks you are selected for IPS. Actually IPS means Indian Police Service and its not a Rank or Post. Its a Department of Police. You can be an IPS Officer in your age of 21 if you got selection at this age in the rank of ACP or Addl.S.P (which is for Probation period of nearly 3 yrs.) and after probation period at about 24 - 25 yrs you became Superintendent of Police of a Dist. So, work hard and do your best. Its not so easy and not so tough. Its depends on your dedication on your Studies.


Minimum age fixed for IAS/IPS is 21 years.

You can try for IPS upto 30 years of age.

The age relaxation for the SC/ST is category is 5 years and obc category is 3 years and attempt the exam is the no limit of the SC/ST category and the 7 times for the other backward classes.

The exam notification is declare in the month of the December and preliminary exam is held in the month of the May and the main exam held in the month of the October

Its purely depends on your dedication towards your study for becoming an IPS officer .

Because if you fully dedicated your self into IPS preparation then it may be happened that you will become an IPS officer in your first attempt or in your second attempt .

But if you are careless in your preparation then it will take time for becoming an IPS officer .

So its depends on your dedication towards your work .

The criteria for the IPS exam is below :

1) You should complete the graduation from any recognized university in any stream .

2) If you are in final year of your graduation then also you can give the exam but before the main exam you should complete the graduation .

3) Age limit is below :
For general cast 21-30 years , 3 years upper age relaxation for obc cast ,5 years upper age relaxation for sc/st cast
, 10 years upper age relaxation for physically handicapped .

4) Maximum number of attempts that are allowed .
4 for general cast , 7 for obc cast and no limit for sc/st cast .

So you have to fulfill above criteria if you want to give the IPS exam .
