    >> The UPSC counts the number of attempts based on the number of times you get yourself registered for a particular examination.
    >> Once you get yourself registered,it has to be counted as one attempt,irrespective of the fact whether you go ahead to give the examination or not.

    Even if you give the Prelims and fail to qualify for the Mains,it is going to be counted as one attempt.

    >> Also take note that the number of attempts is restricted only in the CIVIL SERVICES examinations and the INDIAN FOREST SERVICE examinations.
    >> These exams include 4 attempts for General Category,7 for OBC candidates and Unlimited for SC and ST candidates.

    >> As for any other exam,you can have any number of attempt,provided you meet the eligibility criteria of it particularly.

    yes if you are a general candidate then you can give the exam only 4 times.
    prelims attempt are counted by the Upsc

    How UPSC will calculate valid attempts? Based on Prelims or Mains?

    it is said that as a general candidate i will be able to attempt for the civils exams for 4 times.
    I would like to know if an attempt of civils prelims or the mains is calculated as a valid attempt
