How UPSC will calculate valid attempts? Based on Prelims or Mains?

it is said that as a general candidate i will be able to attempt for the civils exams for 4 times.
I would like to know if an attempt of civils prelims or the mains is calculated as a valid attempt

    Hello there..

    >> The UPSC counts the number of attempts based on the number of times you get yourself registered for a particular examination.
    >> Once you get yourself registered,it has to be counted as one attempt, irrespective of the fact whether you go ahead to give the examination or not.
    >>
Even if you give the Prelims and fail to qualify for the Mains,it is going to be counted as one attempt.

    >> Also take note that the number of attempts is restricted only in the CIVIL SERVICES examinations and the INDIAN FOREST SERVICE examinations.
    >> These exams include 4 attempts for General Category,7 for OBC candidates and Unlimited for SC and ST candidates.

    >> As for any other exam, you can have any number of attempt, provided you meet the eligibility criteria of it particularly.

    >> For further insight, visit the official website of the UPSC :: www.upsc.gov.in !!

    all the best.
