Hello..!!

For books, I would suggest "Modern India" by Bipin Chandra, supplemented by "India's struggle for Independence" by Bipin Chandra, Mukherjee, Panikkar.
Spectrum's book on Modern India that people is also a storehouse for facts!

For ancient history, I suggest "Ancient India" by R.S.Sharma(a wonderfully concise book where every single word is important) and supplemented sparsely by "The Wonder that was India" by A.L.Basham.


Romila Thapar's treatment of "Ashoka" is venerated in Indian Historiography.

For Medieval India, I suggest Satish Chandra's two volumes on Medieval India quite sufficent.

Apart from this, another famous standard text is "An Advanced History of India" by Majumdar, Raychaudhri and Dutta.

Dear there are so many books available in market but these books are the best and if you use these books and I would say that do not buy all books but use at least 3-4 books of different sections as you consider the best and read a single book more than 10 times before examination then only you will get good command over this subject because revision is everything for IAS examination and for all other competitive examination and below I have attached some previous years question papers for this subject which provides more information about the examination so please download and get more details and prepare well for exam
