Dear actually the selection process depends on your performance and scored marks in main examination of the recruitment process but you are independent to give your own preference to the service that what do you want to become after passing in all stages of recruitment but your final selection depends on the scored percentage marks in main exam and personality test
Preliminary Test - 400 marks for two objective type papers where passing is necessary but these marks are not added anywhere in the selection process
Main Examination - 1800 marks for 7 conventional type papers and basically you have to secure minimum qualifying marks in each paper required by the board then you will be shortlisted for personality test and marks scored in main examination are everything for your career
Personality Test - 275 marks for personal interview process and your final selection is based on - 1800+275 = 2075 marks and according to the expert and experience of civil service aspirants - If you score at least 1200 marks in main exam and 200 marks in personality test with best performance then your final selection for some posts is sure i.e - IRS - Indian Revenue Services and if you score more marks as - 1500+ in both Main test and personality test then you can prefer for IPS Officer post and you should also know that top 50 highest scorers are selected for the post of IFS - Indian Foreign Services and ranking of other passed candidates is based on marks scored by them so you have to try your best to get highest marks at once and get the job
Suppose you prefer for IPS Officer Rank and passed all the required tests including Physical and Medical test and get positive at every stage and scored total - 1450 marks and UPSC board demand for minimum 1500 marks out of 2075 to become IPS Officer or IAS Officer in your preferred cadre then you will not be selected because your marks are less but you may get another post in other services which are listed with all details in attached official notification of this examination so please download this attached notification and prepare well for examination
You should take coaching classes to be prepared before appearing for this examination because if you get good preparation and practice then you may find yourself with better performance in examination that is needed for every aspirant and you can score more marks than that of others so possibly take coaching classes and give more time to make your dream true to become IAS Officer in India
