BY both the methods you mentioned.
You have to give preference while applying for Mains and also before interview.
Based on your Final rank achieved after adding marks from Mains Written and Interview,and the preference stated by you, One gets the service.
Generally IFS and IAS are the preferred service of all and only the toppers gets these 2 services.Once selected for IFS or IAS you will not be allowed to appear for Civil service in the future.
UPSC recruits officers in Indian Foreign Services through Civil Services Examination. People have named Civil Services exam as IAS exam and they don't know that Indian Administrative Services comes under Civil Services exam and there are many other services for which the exam is conducted by UPSC.
So you can apply for Civil Services exam if you want to become a officer in Indian Foreign Services. All you need is a Graduation degree in any discipline from a recognized University.
Age should be between 21 to 30 years if you are from General category. Age is relaxable for reserved categories.
SC/ST : 5 years relaxation
OBC : 3 years relaxation
Selection is on merit and you have to score top marks in following stages.
-Preliminary Exam
-Mains Exam
-Interview
According to your score or rank in UPSC Civil Services Exams, they assigned the posts
