one should look for the total plan of exam and accordingly start preparing because this exam take complete one year in itself, while filling preliums exam form one have to write about mains optional subjects also ,so subject selection should be done prior ,going through the whole syllabus one can find out the relevant books to be studied and start preparing ,one good news paper like ,the hindu, should be religiously read daily basis, and monthly magzines should also need to be tuned ,ncert books of school level help in gs paper ,where as csat aptitude can be prepared through differnt sources as tata mgraw and other books ,if one is good in aptitude then no extra preparation is required , for english part good knowledge of vocabulary would be advantageous

dear good preparation does not depend upon how much hours you study it depends upon the sufficient and time managed study,
you should manage your time well so that every subject gets the proper time to do better preparation,
also you should make time table of all subjects and give appropriate time for study to each subjects,
also you can download previous years question papers from the official website of upsc and can practice in better way.
    solve practice papers daily,
