i don't know about which exam you want to know but in general for upsc exam first you have to download sylllabus from upsc.gov.in
official website of upsc
and then you may buy a book for its preparation.

Syllabus for UPSC exams:
PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION
The Examination shall comprise two compulsory
papers of 200 marks each.
Paper I - (200 marks) Duration : Two hours
1. Current events of national and internationalimportance.
2. History of India and Indian National Movement.
3. Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
4. Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
5. Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
6. General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialisation
7. General Science.
Paper II- (200 marks) Duration: Two hours
1. Comprehension
2. Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
3. Logical reasoning and analytical ability
4. Decision-making and problem solving
5. General mental ability
6. Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation(charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. - Class X level)

one should look for the total plan of exam and accordingly start preparing because this exam take complete one year in itself,while filling preliums exam form one have to write about mains optional subjects also ,so subject selection should be done prior ,going through the whole syllabus one can find out the relevant books to be studied and start preparing ,one good news paper like ,the hindu, should be religiously read daily basis,and monthly magzines should also need to be tuned ,ncert books of school level help in gs paper ,where as csat aptitude can be prepared through differnt sources as tata mgraw and other books ,if one is good in aptitude then no extra preparation is required , for english part good knowledge of vocabulary would be advantageous
