    Hello,

For preparation of IAS mains, you would require a minimum of one year if the mains will remain on the same pattern as it is now. For mains, you need to prepare 2 full subjects each of which will require atleast 5 months to cover and complete. Moreover, you need to prepare for GS paper. If your english is not very good, then you must prepare for English paper also, as if you will not be able to secure a minimum marks in it, all your efforts will get wasted. This all prparation will take even more than 12 months.

Mind it, it is not guaranteed even after you devote 12 months in preparation that you will get a rank in final list. Some people prepare for 3-4 years and appear for 3-4 times but even then could not succeed in getting a rank in final list.

    Thanks,
    goyalk

As far as IAS exam is concerned one of the toughest exam.of UPSC.Without preparation IAS can not be cracked. As per your quote "sufficient" there is no end of preparation the more you will read the more you will learn. But must not be over confident about the IAS job,it may cause depression,do your duty result will be usual.

So far my knowledge goes an IAS candidate should start preparation before the1(one) year commencement of IAS examination. And usually consume 8 hours a day for the purpose.

    Thank You,

Dear according to the decided time of UPSC board - the prelims exam would be conducted at - 19th of may 2013 and the mains examination would be conducted - 8th November 2013 so that there is about 6 months of gap the board has provided to it's aspirants who would qualify the preliminary examination of the civil services

According to a normal candidate, the provided time is enough if he/she use this golden time only in the preparation of the UPSC mains examination because this opportunity does not comes again and again and may be that this time the candidate has been qualified in the prelims but what about the next year prelims exam means may be that he/she get failed in that prelims so that you should use this time only for preparation of mains examination

Examination pattern is following for UPSC civil services examination

Preliminary exam - 2 papers for 400 marks in objective type pattern and qualifying in each paper is necessary

Mains examination - 9 papers for 2000 marks in conventional type pattern

Paper I - Any One Indian Language - 300 marks
Paper II - English Language - 300 marks
    Paper III - Essay - 300 marks
Paper IV and V - General Studies - 300 marks each
Paper VI and VII - Any one selected subject - 300 marks
Paper VIII and IX - Any one selected subject - 300 marks

qualifying in each paper is necessary and if you qualify the mains then you would be called for interview which has 300 marks

    All the best
