Donot worry ,I am providing you all the necessary details regarding civil services examination which was organised last year:
The civil services examination in 2011 was conducted on 12th June (preliminary test).
The total no of candidates who applied for this examination last year is 4,72,290.Out of this only 2,43,003 wrote the test.
Now coming to the result analysis,11,984 candidates were selected for the main examination which was organised in november.Out of this only 2417 students were called for the personality test.
Finally ,710 candidates including 715 male and 195 female candidates were called for the giving their services in various services like IAS,IPS,IFS etc.
The top two positions were acquired by women named Shena Aggarwal and Rukmani Riar.
Now you can understand how much tough the examination is .So please labour hard so as to ensure success.

For you kind information that there is no criteria about the number of the candidates and there is no record announced by the UPSC board or government that how many candidates were appeared for UPSC Civil services 2011 so that it is not possible to tell you about the exact numbers of the candidates but you should know that only graduates are eligible to appear for this exam so that the number of the applicants would have around 8-10 lakh in all over India but only in preliminary exam then there would be only thousands of students in mains exam.
