Examination Pattern
The Civil Services Exam is a paper based test and consists of two successive stages:The basic eligibility criteria for Civil Services Exam are as follows:
- Preliminary Examination � comprising 2 exams � General Studies and CSAT
- Civil Services Main Examination (Written and Interview)
Educational Qualification
The candidate must hold any degree in any discipline from any recognized university
Final year degree students are also eligible
Degree obtained by distance education/open university is also eligible if the university is a recognized university

Examination Pattern of UPSC Civil Service Exams 2013 : There are following three steps
1. Preliminary Exam : This is an objective type exam which has 2 separate papers and each paper has 200 marks and you will have to appear for both papers and qualify this exam and if you could not qualify in this exam then you would not be allowed for mains exam.
2. Mains Examination : This is a conventional type paper where you will have to qualify 9 different papers and you would have to choose any two subjects from the following list for this exam and the complete pattern for mains exam is following as :

Paper III - Essay Writing - 200 Marks
