Hello,
It is good that you have decided to appear for civil services. I want to shed some light on Psychology as an optional for civil services before you join any coaching for it.
Psychology is a vast subject that consists of 14 chapters in each of 2 papers (total 28 chapters). The chapters should be mastered well individually and most importantly they must be viewed as a part of the whole syllabus. Psychology is totally based on different studies that took place at different times and you will have to substantiate every point that you write with a reference to a particular study.
Moreover, every topic has a number of theories associated with it like if you take the topic of forgetting there are theories like Classical theory of forgetting by Herman Ebinghaus, RNA based theories, Freudian theory of forgetting, and many other theories. And to substantiate each theory there are examples where you will have to learn the name of Psychologist who perform that experiment plus the details of that experiment. And this applies to every topic in atleast first paper. Moreover, second paper is totally applied which should be answered with extreme care to get good marks.
Though at first, Psychology will feel like fun as you will find most of it as obvious thing but at the end, everything boils down to remembering everything so that you can write a good answer in the exam. Moreover, these days paper II of Psychology is a horror for candidates and I saw many of my friends switching their subject from Psychology to some other.
What I have written above is my first hand experience. Though it is not meant to discourage you, but I felt that you should be aware of the facts before taking a plunge into Psychology.
If you have a Psychology background and if you are absolutely sure about you abilities for Psychology, then only take it . Otherwise, you will be playing with fire.
Thanks,
goyalk
