UPSC exams has three stage procedure:-
1.Preliminary exam
2.Mains EXam
3.Interview
Preliminary exam is basically the entrance exam for getting entry in the mains exam of IAS,IPS,IFS etc.
The Preliminary exam is same for all the services.
Mains exam has nine papers which you will have to clear to go in the Interview process.
After clearing the Mains exam The short list of candidates is published by UPSC and the short listed candidates are called for Interview Process.
After clearing all the processes you will be given the post for which you have applied.

the upsc conducts civil services examination every year to recruit the candidates for varioust posts. the civil services examination consisits of three stages namely the prelims,mains and personality test .you have to clear all the stages to get in to some service
pt is the first stage.in this you have to appear in the objective type papers.you have to appear in two papers on the same day.the two papers are general studies paper and the csat paper.
if you clear the pt you will be eligible to write the mains examination.the marks scored in the mains examination is counted for the merit. this examination is of conventional type and you have to appaer in some nine papers. these papers include four general studies paper and two optional subject paper. the optional subject has to be choosen by you.
apart from the above you ahve to appear in the essay and the qualifying language papers.after mains you will be called for interview if you score good marks.

PT is the prelimanr and you can say gateway to all to the Mains , and its common to all . After that Mains is the gateway to the Interview Round (Final Round) its consists of 9 paper.
