Re: How many students will take management subject as optional paper for Mains? Will you recommend it to a serious aspirant like me?
Dear Applicant,
-The percentage of students who opt for MANAGEMENT is not very high,i.e,its about 5-6% when compared to the other subjects.
-It is not highly recommended to candidates, although if you are keen and commited, then you will be successful for sure.
-Usually,I would have advised you to opt for the Arts Subject in particular.Subjects such as INDIAN HISTORY,PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION and GEOGRAPHY are highly scoring. They even form the core of the Paper-I of the preliminary exams.
Hence, you would not need to dedicate too much of time for the preliminary exams.
-HOWEVER,if you have done enough to prepare well for MANAGEMENT,then do opt for it.It is also a subject you can do well,if you have improved writing skills.
-Make sure that you are into the complete details of the subject.Avoid selective study.
-Solve a lot of model papers to get well with the questions that are asked about in the subject.
-As you have said about yourself, being a committed student,I won't mind recommending you for Management. You'll definitely do well.
-Just take note that the combination of COMMERCE AND ACCOUNTANCY with MANAGEMENT is restricted.Hence, avoid it.
All The Best !!

Re: How many students will take management subject as optional paper for Mains? Will you recommend it to a serious aspirant like me?
Dear pal,
- Optional subjects are given in the case of main exam in IAS. And those who wish can choose their own discipline of interest not that you need to choose particular disciplines of the available.
- Management is one of the optional subject that is available for the exam. It is aspirants mentality to choose optional subject it is not possible to say how many choose this as optional subject.
- Nothing is there to recommend the optional subject as it is your wish all the optional subjects have the same weightage . So you can choose if you have management as your optional subject if you have interest.
- The other optional subject that is available for you are botany, physics, chemistry, mathematics, zoology, commerce, economics, politics, animal husbandry, statistics, civil, mechanical, electrical, etc.
- A good preparation is required to do well in the exam as every step is taken to make the paper more competitive .

Re: How many students will take management subject as optional paper for Mains? Will you recommend it to a serious aspirant like me?
In civil services main examination 2009, 18 candidates have appeared for management optional. Out of them only 6 cleared the exam. the success percentage is 33.4% . The total number of mains candidates is 11514. In mains exam 2008, only 13 candidates have taken management as an optional out of total 11329 preliminary qualified students.
These statistics is according to annual report published by UPSC and submitted to the parliament. It clearly reveals that only very very few candidates take management as an optional. If you have prior knowledge in management (take the syllabus and verify) and you are really interested then take that optional, otherwise a strict no. If you are willing to write, then go ahead. Success favours only the brave
