Hii.
Psycology has no doubt has more merits than Management .
Here are some of the reasons why:
1. In UPSC, the syllabus of psychology is a very well-defined.
2. Since psychology is a very scientific subject, it is easy to learn, understand, remember and reproduce the subject-matter of psychology in the exam.
3. With its emphasis on the scientific methods and its goal of being modeled on the line of natural science, psychology becomes easier and more comprehensible for students with science background.
4. For the last ten years, psychology has been one of the most popular and successful subjects for UPSC mains. For example, in the year 2008, out of Top Ten students in the final list of the selected candidates of the UPSC, 7 had psychology as one of their optional. Similar trend has been observed in many previous years results.
5. By virtue of the very subject matter of psychology which is the study of manourselves, our friends, our family members, and other members of our societypsychology provides ample opportunity to relate whatever we learn in the books or in the classrooms with some real-life events of our own lives or with somebody elses. We ourselves are the example of the topic that we study. This makes psychology a very lively subject. And scoring as well!
6. Study of psychology helps us in the preparation of other subjects as well, because many of the things that we study in psychology like learning, memory, thinking, problem-solving, intelligence, creativity, motivation etc. are related to the development of our general cognitive abilities which will certainly result in better learning of other subjects as well.
7. Many topics of psychology like community psychology, social change, psychology of terrorism, rehabilitation psychology, problem of social integration, environmental psychology, sports psychology, psychology of population growth, gender psychology etc. give us a very good and insightful idea about what these issues arewhat are their psychological and other basis. This deep understanding of the basic and most important problems of our country will definitely help us to score very good marks in the essay paper of civil services exam. And as you all must know, essay is the one subject which has the highest potentiality of making a difference between a successful and un-successful candidate at the civil services main exam.
8. Last, but not the least, the importance of psychology goes much beyond the preparation of the UPSCs examination alone. The knowledge of psychology has a much wider application in life. It gives us a new insight into human life. I believe that the real success in life does not take place in the class-room of a school, college or a university. It is not determined even by success in UPSCs Civil Service Examination. The real success of life means making and maintaining a good, satisfactory and fulfilling inter-personal relationshipat home, at workplace, with family, with colleagues, with friends, with relatives, with our children etc. Knowledge of psychology equips us for that. If you know psychology, if you have understood it well, then you will have a new, rare and eye-opening insight into the behavior of ourselves and others. You can understand others behavior in a proper manner, you can interpret them in a positive way and you will have an effective tool in your hand to manipulate and change them. In short, you will be in a better position to bring about a changea change that actually matters. This knowledge will also help you to carry out your job in a much better manner once you clear the civil service exam, because there also you have to ultimately deal with the people only. Of course, psychology will help you there at every moment. It has the potentiality to make you a better Civil Servant.
