Of-course you can do the preparation for IAS/IPS examination. If you want to take commerce in UPSC Mains exam then you can take.

But I suggest you to take Arts Subjects like History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy etc. If you have good writing skills then you can absolutely Crack the Exam.

After that you have to go for the Question Pattern of Exam so you should download and print Previous Years Question Papers from www.upsc.gov.in

Model Test Papers and Sample Papers are most important for Practice.

Yes, Its a wise decision because its a scoring subject and the positive side of your decision is that your background is Commerce. But I would like to suggest about you in regards of Optional Subjects is that "Don't choose Management and Commerce & Accountancy" and "Management and Public Administration" Because these combinations are not allowed. Except these choose any other easy subjects of Arts in which you feel Comfortable. Good Luck...

First of all there is no optional for preliminary exam. Optionals have been removed in preliminary exam from 2011 and all candidates have to appear for 2 compulsory papers.
But for mains exam you can choose management as your optional, provided you have prior exposure in the subject (if you have studied it already as part of your graduation). Every year only a few students take management as an optional. According to annual report published by UPSC, only 13 students have attempted this management optional out of nearly 12000 candidates in 2009. Similar trend is followed till now. Thus there are almost no coaching centres for this optional. You have to prepare yourself and it will be hard to find someone who can guide you. So better think and decide. But if you have prior exposure, then you can surely succeed.
