In UPSC or any of competitve exams this GS (genral studies) is basic and most important thing without this you cant get into mains:

for genral studies best way to prepare is:

* government books for STD 5 to 12th's general studies.
if you go through this u wll get good marks because this all exams are taken by goventment so it is natural that they give preference to this books.

other that that you have to read :

* general knowledge book like navneet
* all magazine's that is also good souce for GS and current affairs .
* current affairs is most most important for prelims .
