    Main Examination - Optional Subjects


    Paper-I One of the Indian Languages to be selected by the candidate from the 22 languages included in the VIIIth Schedule to the Constitution (Qualifying Paper) 300 Marks
    Paper-II English (Qualifying Paper) 300 Marks
    Paper-III Essay [in the medium you choose] 200 Marks
    Papers IV & V General Studies (300 Marks for each paper) 600 Marks
    Papers VI, VII, VIII & IX Any two subjects (each having 2 papers) to be selected from the prescribed optional subjects (300 marks for each paper) 1200 Marks
    Total Marks for Written Examination 2000 Marks
    Interview Test [in the medium you choose] 300 Marks
    Grand Total 2300 Marks

    UPSC Civil Services Exam provides a list of optional subjects for Main Exam as follows:

    Optional Subjects:

    � Agriculture
    � Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science
    � Anthropology
    � Botany
    � Chemistry
    � Civil Engineering
    � Commerce and Accountancy
    � Economics
    � Electrical Engineering
    � Geography
    � Geology
    � History
    � Law
    � Management
    � Mathematics
    � Mechanical Engineering
    � Medical Science
    � Philosophy
    � Physics
    � Political Science and International Relations
    � Psychology
    � Public Administration
    � Sociology
    � Statistics
    � Zoology
    � Literature of one of the following languages:
    � Arabic, Assamese, Bodo, Bengali, Chinese, Dogri, English, French, German,
    Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri,
    Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Pali, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Sanskrit, Santali, Sindhi,
    Tamil, Telugu, Urdu.



    You cannot select the following combinations of subjects:

    (a) Political Science & International Relations and Public Administration;
    (b) Commerce & Accountancy and Management;
    (c) Anthropology and Sociology;
    (d) Mathematics and Statistics;
    (e) Agriculture and Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science.
    (f) Management and Public Administration;
    (g) Of the Engineering subjects, viz., Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering
    and Mechanical Engineering�not more than one subject.
    (h) Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science and Medical Science.

    Suggestion:

    You can select optional subjects based on your qualification. The subject in which you are most confident can be selected and can write for the Main Examination. So that you can score well and easily pass through Civil Services Mains Exam.

    How to Select Optional Subjects in UPSC Civils Exams :

    Firstly, you need make a variance that in which subjects you are good enough and in which you aren't.

    Select the subjects for the examination in which you are fair enough to answer many.

    And the subjects which you fee tough, leave those for optional subjects.

    And also, please do not leave those subjects which has more weight-age in the examination.

    This can reduce your over all score.

    You should choose the optional subject very carefully because your success is depends upon these subject.

    You should choose only those subjects where you are confident and well familiar from the core of subject.

    The exam standard is very high and you will have to deep study of subject, so you should have great interest in subject and eagerness of study.
