There is a buzz in UPSC circles that the mains pattern will change sometime soon but not sure when. So, there is no guarantee that by the time you will be appearing for exam, political science as an optional subject will remain. My advice to you is to prepare general things first which will remain till 2016. These include GS, History, polity, geography, science and tech, economics etc. You should first solidify your base. Do you have a habit of looking at Atlas to search for places? If not, inculcate it. It would be beneficial in your preparation. Regarding subjects, my advice would be to study college course with dedication. And, if the subject remains till 2014, take coachings if you need.
